Brazile leads tie-down roping, all-around at Cheyenne Frontier Days

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 29, 2017 — Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, moved into the lead for a possible eighth and ninth Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (CFD) championship on Saturday.

The 23-time world champion won round two of tie-down roping with a time of 10.5 seconds and captured first overall with a total time of 22.7. Brazile won the tie-down title at the “Daddy of ‘em All” in 2014. He also won the CFD team roping title in 2012 and the steer roping three times (2000, 2001 and 2013).

Although he has won the all-around championship here twice, he hasn’t done so since 2002. No one has won money in two events at Frontier Park this year, so the all-around title will go to the person that competed in two or more events and wins the most money. Brazile has the lead, but several other cowboys could win the versatility award.

Cheyenne Frontier Days is a family tradition for Brazile. When he was a child, he competed in dummy-roping matches against other youngsters under the grandstands when his father competed here. His daughter Style is carrying on that legacy. She was roping the dummy against the boys in the cowboy parking area on Sunday.

Stevi Hillman of Weatherford, Texas, took the overall lead in barrel racing Saturday. Her time of 17.63 was only good enough for eighth in the second round, but gave her a total of 35.11, edging Wyoming’s Cassidy Kruse by one one-hundredth of a second. She also added $1,252 to the $6,573 she pocketed for winning the first round at CFD.

Hillman, who qualified for her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) last year, is currently second in the Women’s Pro Rodeo Association (WPRA) world standings.

The radiologic technician is riding a five-year-old gray gelding called Sharpie (registered name MCMImaSharpGuy,) owned by Matt and Bendi Dunn. This is Sharpie’s first year to rodeo. Hillman began riding him in February and has been thrilled with his poise. Sharpie previously competed primarily in futurity barrel races where there aren’t a lot of distractions. Many horses take a while to acclimate to the rodeo atmosphere.

“He was pretty wound up, with everything going on in the performance,” Hillman said. “But he stayed focused and I was proud of him.

The competition concluded Saturday in the rookie saddle bronc riding. Quincy Crum of McArthur, California, took the championship with a total of 147 points. Crum, who qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo for Western Nevada College, was excited to win “the Daddy.”

“I’m extremely honored to compete at Cheyenne,” Crum said, “and to win it is huge.”

Crum works on his family’s ranch and shoes horses when not competing in rodeos. When he learned that his name would be added to a list of CFD winners that began in 1911 and includes many legendary bronc riders, Crum was stunned. “That’s pretty special, pretty cool,” he said.

Championship Sunday at the 121st Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo begins at 12:15 p.m. Sunday when titles will be awarded in the all-around, eight events and the wild horse race.

Rodeo Contestants to Watch Saturday, July 29, Eighth Performance

Rough Stock Events – Bareback, Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding:

Reigning world champion bareback rider, Tim O’Connell, continued his winning streak with an 84.5-point ride on Rafter G Rodeo’s Biscuit yesterday. That tied him for third in the first round and put him in contention for his first CFD title. Kelly Timberman, 41, showed the young guns how it was done with an 82-point ride. Cody Kiser has made it big in both the arena and in Hollywood. Kiser rode for 82 points yesterday and has drawn Korkow Rodeo’s Joker Poker today. Clayton Biglow rode that horse for 80.5 earlier this week. Kiser has a Civil Engineering degree from the University of Nevada-Reno and was the stunt man for Bradley Cooper in the movie “American Sniper.”

Louisiana’s Cody DeMoss is aiming for another CFD title after his 85-point ride yesterday. He tied for second in the first round. DeMoss holds the CFD arena record of 91 points, set in 2010, and has won this rodeo three times. Current world champion saddle bronc rider, Zeke Thurston, rode Rafter G Rodeo’s Orange Crush for 83 points in round one. These two have the best opportunity to advance to the finals on Sunday.

Bull riders came for the money yesterday. Clayton Foltyn rode Stace Smith Rodeo’s Tracker for 85.5 points, to place fourth in the first round. He has drawn Stace Smith’s Red Man today, a bull that is known to score high. Foltyn is also a former CFD all-around champion (2009). He won that title competing in both bareback and bull riding. Jordan Spears, ranked 9th in the world standings, scored 83.5 points on Friday. He will try Stace Smith Rodeo’s Chocolate Thunder today, a bull that has only been ridden once in eight attempts this year. Shane Proctor knows what the pay window looks like at CFD. He was the 2011 CFD champion, which helped boost him to the world title that year. Proctor scored 82 yesterday and will match up with the high-scoring bull, Tracker, of the Stace Smith herd. If he is successful his winnings could boost him into the top 15 in the world standings. So far only one cowboy has ridden bulls in both rounds, but 12 cowboys, including three-time world champ Sage Kimzey, have a chance to do so today.

Timed Events – Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Tie-Down Roping and Barrel Racing:

Baylor Roche’s time of 6.7 seconds won the first round of steer wrestling yesterday and earned him $6,289. Before he came to Cheyenne, he was 11th in the world standings. Roche is riding Bubba Boots” college rodeo horse, Caesar. Bubba was the all-around champion for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Associations Big Sky region this year while competing at Wyoming’s Northwest College in Powell. Lucky for Bubba, Baylor’s win earned him mount money to help pay for his college education and he could earn more if Roche does well today.

Georgia’s Tim Pharr is working his way up from 25th in the world standings after his 10.7-second run in the tie-down roping. It has been ten years since Pharr competed at CFD. His run made a warm welcome back to the legendary CFD arena, placing second in the round and winning $5,181. Pharr raises and trains his own horses, most of them are named after characters in his favorite movie, Lonesome Dove. His 15-year old mare, Maggie, was his mount of choice because in Pharr’s words, “She doesn’t mess up.”

Team ropers Erich Rogers and Cory Petska roped in 9.0 seconds, tying them for sixth in the first round and earning $1,730 each. They are both second in the world standings. 2009 CFD champion header, Chad Masters, and his partner, Travis Graves, roped in 9.6. They are on the bubble to qualify for the WNFR, sitting 17th as a header (Masters) and 15th as a heeler (Graves.) Clay Smith and Paul Eaves, who are fourth and third respectively in the world standings, are in good shape with a 9.8 in round one.

Barrel racer Stevi Hillman is currently second in the world and has her eyes set on a CFD championship after her first-round win. With $6,573 pocketed already for that 17.48-second run, she aims to lay down another fast run in hopes of taking the overall lead. Cassidy Kruse placed second in the first round with a time of 17.60, cashing in $5,634. Winning CFD would hold a special place in the heart of this Wyoming cowgirl. Colorado’s Kim Schulze is a walking miracle. The 2011 CFD barrel racing champion experienced a near death accident in February. After being kicked by a horse, Schulze had a lacerated liver (grade 4 out of 5) and internal bleeding. She spent a week and a half in the hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, undergoing several different procedures. She is still working to recover. It’s taken cowgirl try and perseverance to get her back in the arena, as she still struggles with pain and weakness. Schulze was a 17.93 in the first round.

Roche bests 161 steer wrestlers to win first round of Cheyenne Frontier Days

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 28, 2017 — Baylor Roche of Tremonton, Utah, took less than seven seconds to earn the biggest Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) paycheck of his career on Friday. The two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) steer wrestler won just under a thousand dollars here two years ago, when he placed eighth in the final round and finished eighth overall.

This year his time of 6.7 seconds was the fastest of all 161 steer wrestlers, won the first round and earned him nearly $6,300. He will compete in the second round on Saturday with a chance to qualify for Championship Sundayagain.

Roche, 28, was riding a borrowed horse named Caesar that is owned by collegiate all-around cowboy Bubba Boots from Idaho. Roche’s younger brother Baxter competed on the first day of steer wrestling here and rode Caesar, then recommended that Baylor ride the horse as well. The recommendation was a good one for both rider and owner, with Roche paying Boots nearly $800 of his winnings in “rent.”

The first-round paycheck was well-timed, pushing Roche from 11th to 9th in the world standings. Additional winnings would help Roche to solidify a berth at his third NFR.

It’s been ten years since Tim Pharr competed at the “Daddy of ‘em All.” The tie-down roper from Resaca, Georgia, wasted no time in making his presence known at the 121st edition of CFD. He turned in a time of 10.7 seconds, tying for second place in the first round and earning $5,181.

Another solid run on Saturday would put Pharr into the championship round. Should he make the field of 12 on Sunday, he could be the first tie-down roper from east of the Mississippi to win the CFD championship since Floridian Rabe Rabon did it 31 years ago.

Pharr, who raises and trains roping horses, is riding a 15-year-old mare that he calls Maggie. “She doesn’t mess up,” Pharr said of the blaze-faced sorrel mare, and that quality is important in a horse when competing in the 700’ long arena at Frontier Park.

The eighth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo begins at 12:15 p.m. Saturday. That performance will complete the second round of competition and determine the field for Championship Sunday.

Rodeo Contestants to Watch Friday, July 28, Seventh Performance

Rough Stock Events – Bareback, Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding:

At 41 years old, Kelly Timberman is one of the oldest bareback riders still on the road today. A healthy lifestyle and intense workout routine keeps him in prime shape to compete with the young guns, as bareback riding is one of the most physically demanding events in rodeo. Timberman, from Mills, Wyoming, is the 2004 world champion. Frenchman, Evan Jayne has had a highlight year with several big rodeo wins.Adding a CFD championship to that list would help him qualify for his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Jayne and his wife, Kristin, had a scare earlier this year when their four-year-old daughter, Sienna, experienced a brain aneurysm and was in a medically-induced coma. Sienna is now fully recovered. Jayne and fellow bareback rider Clint Cannon were part of a 2007 French documentary film, Ballade Pour Un Cowboy (Ballad of a Cowboy), which inspired Jayne to start his own Vlog this year. The vlog details the everyday life of a rodeo cowboy with high-quality footage and lots of good laughs. Former college champion and current world champion, Tim O’Connell, was second at the Days of 47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City, Utah, winning $25,000. He leads the world standings and hopes to continue distancing himself from the pack.

Current world champion saddle bronc rider, Zeke Thurston is sitting second in the world standings and has drawn Rafter G Rodeo’s Orange Crush. The horse provides cowboys the opportunity for high scores. That could help Thurston catch up to current world standings leader, Jacobs Crawley, who is in good shape to come back for CFDs Championship Sunday. Shade Etbauer will try his best to follow in his Uncles Dan (1996) and Billy (2009) Etbauer’s footsteps to win a CFD championship. He’s currently first in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rookie standings and 25th in the world standings, a win here could boost Shade to his first NFR qualification. Three-time CFD champion (2004, 2010, 2012), Cody DeMoss is third in the world standings and has had one of his most successful years since he joined the PRCA in 2000. DeMoss won nearly half a million dollars at The American (non-PRCA rodeo) earlier this year and just earned $50,000 at the Days of 47 Rodeo. Taos Muncy, the 2007 CFD and world champion, will also highlight the field.

Sage Kimzey likes a good challenge and setting records. He just reset the Championship Bull Riding (CBR) record by winning his third CBR World Title and is three-time consecutive PRCA world champion bull rider. CFD is one of his favorite rodeos even though he has yet to win it. He likes it because it is a “traditional rodeo that continues to preserve the Western way of life.” Kimzey has drawn Stace Smith Rodeo’s Rebelution, who has a 100% buck off rate this year. Cole Melancon, eighth and Dustin Bowen, 12th in the world standings, will both be on the hunt for a CFD win. Melancon, who just won the college bull riding title in Casper last month, has drawn Stace Smith Rodeo’s Hacksaw Ridge. The bull has been ridden once out of eight times this year. Bowen will attempt to ride Smith, Harper & Morgan’s Texas Red who can take him to the leader board if rode. Melancon rode Texas Red earlier this year for 83.5 points at an Xtreme Bulls event. Don’t be surprised if you see cowboy sportsmanship take place as Melancon will probably give Bowen pointers on Texas Red’s tricks in the arena.

Timed Events – Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Tie-Down Roping and Barrel Racing:

The steer wrestling will be packed with some of the top PRCA contestants in the world standings. Colorado’s Josh Peek is an all-around contender competing in steer wrestling and tie-down roping. Peek is currently 13th in the world in steer wrestling. Matt Reeves and Baylor Roche are tenth and eleventh in the world standings and will be going for the win. CFD presents a unique set up for these contestants. The steer gets a 30-foot head start before the cowboy can leave the box, or a penalty is incurred. Any competitor will tell you that CFD is an adrenaline rush as they are running at high speed while jumping from their horses’ back to wrestle large, strong steers. 2005 CFD champion and Wyoming cowboy, Seth Brockman aims to repeat his title.

The tie-down roping will be star studded as well. First in the world standings and fresh off a $50,000 win, Tuf Cooper will be trying his hand at this fresh pen of calves. His brother-in-law and 23-time world champion, Trevor Brazile, who won the tie-down roping here in 2014, will be hoping to add to his legacy. Ace Slone wants to continue his winning streak after winning California Rodeo Salinas, which boosted him to 13th in the world standings. Hunter Herrin and Tim Pharr are also working on climbing up the world standings ladder to qualify for the NFR. Herrin is 16th in the world and Pharr is 25th.

The team roping will have ten of the top 20 cowboys in the world standings competing today along with some former CFD champions. Header Chad Masters was the CFD champion in 2009, however this year he will be roping with a different partner, Travis Graves. Masters and Graves are on the bubble to qualify for the NFR, sitting 17th as a header and 15th as a heeler. Another CFD championship would boost them in the world standings. Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith are the only team to have won a CFD championship together in this group. That happened in 2012. Heeler, Cesar de la Cruz is no stranger to the prestigious CFD championship. With two different partners, he won the title in 2006 and 2010. Today, he is roping with Hayes Smith who is 23rd in the world standings.

The barrel racing should continue speeding up with tomorrow’s lineup. Hailey Kinsel and her horse Sister are on a roll this year. They won nearly half a million dollars at The American (non-PRCA/WPRA rodeo), she is the reigning college rodeo champion, and just won $50,000 dollars at Salt Lake City’s Days of 47 Rodeo. Her earnings have boosted her to seventh in the world standings, virtually qualifying her for her first NFR. 2016 CFD champion Tillar Murray is on the hunt for a repeat title. She is 8th in the world standings in spite of competing with a transverse process fracture in her back from a horse accident at WYO rodeo in Sheridan, Cowgirling up through the pain, she ran an 18.01-second run in the first round. She and her horse Commander will be doing their best to earn a spot in Sunday’s rodeo.

Canadian Scott Guenthner wrestles lead at Cheyenne Frontier Days

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 27, 2017 — Scott Guenthner of Provost, Alberta, took the overall steer wrestling lead by the horns at the 121st Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (CFD). On Thursday, he clocked a time of 8.9 seconds in round two. That time, added to his 8.0-second run in the first round, gave him a total of 16.9 seconds. No other cowboy has been able to wrestle two steers in less than 20.8 seconds.

It’s been a decade since a Canadian took the CFD steer wrestling title. Guenthner would love to break that drought, and he has the talent and the pedigree to do so. His father, Ken, is a former Canadian champion and his cousin, Justin Guenthner, won the Canadian Finals in 2004, but Scott concentrated on hockey when he was younger. Even when he turned his attention to rodeo, tie-down roping was his event of choice.

Scott eventually decided to compete in the family specialty. In 2015, he was the top regular-season steer wrestler in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, a position he also held in 2014 until a serious arm injury took him out of competition for nearly a year. This year he is guaranteed a spot in Sunday’s championship round at the “Daddy of ‘em All.”

Taci Bettis of Round Top, Texas, tied for the second-round lead in barrel racing with a time of 17.44. In her first year of professional rodeo, the ranch-raised Bettis is quickly making a name for herself. She leads the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) rookie of the year standings by nearly $46,000. Plus, she is ranked 11th in the WPRA’s world standings with a good chance to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in her pro rodeo debut season.

With 24 barrel racers left to compete in the second round, Bettis is fourth overall. She seems a likely shoo-in for Championship Sunday when the top 12 overall will compete for the coveted CFD title. However, most of the cowgirls left to run had the fastest times in the opening round. Bettis will be keeping close tabs on barrel racing results on Friday and Saturday to see if she will compete on Sunday.

The seventh performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo begins at 12:15 p.m. tomorrow. Barrel racers will be competing in the second round. The first round of competition in all the other events will be completed.

Rodeo Contestants to Watch Thursday, July 27, Second Performance

Rough Stock Events – Bareback, Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding:

2015 Cheyenne Frontier Days champion bareback rider, Tanner Aus moved to the lead in the first round with an 86.5-point ride yesterday. In the past two years, he has won nearly $20,000 at CFD. Aus is a two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) qualifier and is currently sitting second in the world standings. He has drawn United Pro Rodeo’s Awesome Sauce, which is a horse that can take a rider to an 80-point ride. If Aus and Awesome Sauce can both perform well today, Aus will have a chance at coming back for Sunday’s championship finals. Ponoka, Alberta’s Jake Vold did not disappoint with his 85.5-point ride yesterday. Vold is currently 20th in the world standings and a trip to the pay window would help him secure a trip to his third WNFR. Two-time Cheyenne Frontier Days Champion Will Lowe is ready to win a third CFD buckle after his 84.5-point ride on Three Hills Rodeo’s Junior Bonner on Wednesday.

Brothers, Rusty and Ryder Wright the next generation of saddle bronc riding Wrights, were among fan favorites yesterday. Rusty rode Three Hills Rodeo’s Jumbo Jet to earn 86 points and shoot him to the top of the leader board in the round. Rusty won the National High School Finals Rodeo saddle bronc championship in 2012 and 2013 and proceeded to win the Resistol PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding Rookie of the Year in 2014. His younger brother, Ryder tied for a third with Brody Cress with a score of 83.5 points. Hillsdale, Wyoming’s Cress is a three-time Wyoming state wrestling champion from Cheyenne East and attributes much of his saddle bronc riding success to the physical and mental strength he learned through wrestling.

Bayle Worden took a spin on Universal Pro Rodeo’s Sports Page in the bull riding for 87 points. That ties him for second place in the first round with Elliot Jacoby. Worden just finished riding at the Championship Bull Riding Finals and will attempt to ride Rafter G Rodeo’s The Wookie today. This bull is high on a cowboy’s wish list. Cowboys that have ridden him this year have received an average score of 86 points. Worden has an opportunity to take the lead in the aggregate if he is successful today. Brendon Averett is now tied for fifth in the first-go with a score of 83 points. Josh Frost also continued the Frost legacy with an 81.5-point ride on Dakota Rodeo’s Flight Plan. Frost has drawn Smith, Harper & Morgan’s Rat Race who has been bucked 10 times this year and is yet to be rode.

Timed Events – Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Tie-Down Roping and Barrel Racing:

Watch for Casey Martin and Scott Guenthner to make a move in steer wrestling today. They are second and third in the first round and both have an opportunity to advance to Sunday’s finals. Guenthner is currently sitting 12th in the world standings. 23-year old Dane Browning is a walking miracle. His junior year of high school he had brain surgery to remove a tumor that was causing epileptic seizures. Thursday’s performance theme is Tough Enough to Wear Pink in support of breast cancer research. Steer wrestler Dean McIntyre may be a tough cowboy, but his wife Jamie is a breast cancer survivor. After using alternative therapies to overcome the battle, she was inspired to start “Just Do What Matters,” a non-profit that helps others in similar situations.

Today’s tie-down ropers will be giving it their all for the second go-round as it will be the only opportunity for most of them to get a check. Penalties and missed opportunities kept the team ropers from cashing in yesterday. With four CFD champions in the field, who know what it takes to win here, expect to see fast times.

The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association has an intense lineup of barrel racers for the sixth performance. Currently 11th in the world, Taci Bettis will be running to hopefully continue climbing the world standings and qualify for her first WNFR. Ivy Conrado and Sherry Cervi are both running to hopefully earn a spot in the top 15 in the world standings as they are sitting 18th and 21st. Cervi was the CFD champion in 1995. Jill Welsh is a fighter. She has battled Rheumatoid Arthritis, Kidney cancer and Ovarian cancer. Her horse, Custer, was a huge help in her overcoming difficult times to live out a dream and was named the WPRA/AQHA Horse of the Year for 2015. Rachel Tiedeman is a former CNFR champion and a two-time All-American in the U.S. Girls Wrestling Association in high school and earned another All-American title in college. Wrestling taught Tiedeman a lot about the drive and determination it takes to be a champion in the arena as well.

Rusty Wright hopes to be first saddle bronc rider in his family to win “the Daddy”

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 26, 2017 — Rusty Wright knows how difficult it is to stand out in a field of professional saddle bronc riders. Eight members of his family –  his father Cody, brother Ryder, four uncles and an uncle by marriage – all competed on Wednesday at the 121st Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (CFD).

The Wright family saddle bronc accolades are many – four world championships, three national circuit finals championships, three Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) titles, 28 WNFR qualifications, plus several circuit championships, etc. Despite their collective saddle bronc riding success, no Wright family member has won coveted CFD saddle bronc riding championship.

Rusty, who lives in Milford, Utah, took the first step to ending that drought when he moved into the lead in the first round on Wednesday. His score of 86 points on Three Hills Rodeo’s bucking horse Jumbo Jet put him one point ahead of Oklahoman Hardy Braden who had held the lead since the first performance. Another ride of that caliber in the second round on Thursday would guarantee Rusty a spot in the finals here on Sunday and a shot at the elusive CFD title.

Two years ago, Tanner Aus won the bareback riding championship here at the “Daddy of ‘em All” and went on to qualify for his first WNFR. This year the Granite Falls, Minnesota, cowboy is ranked third in the world standings and is making a bid for a second Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (CFD) championship.

An 86.5-point ride on Three Hills Rodeo’s horse Just Peachy on Wednesday gave Aus the lead in the first round of CFD bareback riding. He’ll try to take the lead in both the second round and overall when he attempts to ride United Pro Rodeo’s horse Awesome Sauce on Thursday. In the past two years, Aus has won nearly $20,000 at Frontier Park and he’s hoping another big win here will help him toward his first world championship

Rodeo Contestants to Watch Wednesday, July 26, Fifth Performance

Rough Stock Events – Bareback, Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding:

Casey Colletti used his 2011 Cheyenne Frontier Days championship in the bareback riding to propel him to his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He hopes to repeat that title with two solid rides here this week. Six of the current top 15 will be competing over the next two days in the bareback riding. Wyatt Denny is coming off a big win from the Days of 47 Rodeo on Monday, where he won $50,000 to move him to second in the world standings. Clayton Biglow, Wyatt’s traveling partner, is also on winning streak. He was first at California Rodeo in Salinas on Sunday, putting him seventh in the world standings.

Also, watch for former college champs, Tilden Hooper and Ty Breuer. Hooper is sitting 26th in the standings and with success on two head could move into a qualifying spot for the NFR, while Breuer is currently 13th in the standings and hoping to move into a more secure position for a chance at a gold buckle.

The Wright family is a dominant force in the saddle bronc riding with seven family members who have been to the NFR competing today. Brothers Cody, Jesse, Jake, Spencer and Alex, along with their brother-in-law, Coburn Bradshaw, will be joined by Cody’s sons Rusty and Ryder. Alex has yet to compete at the NFR. Five of the Wrights and Bradshaw are in the top 15 in the world standings. Bradshaw, a former College National Finals Rodeo champion, was the PRCA Resistol Saddle Bronc Riding Rookie of the Year in 2015.

Canada’s Clay Elliot is also trying to secure his second NFR berth. Elliott owns Gold Spring Custom Hats in his hometown of Nanton, Alberta. After his mom Mona died in 2010, Clay and his family set up Mona’s Cowboy Inspirational Fund to help ranching and rodeo families who experience life-changing illnesses or disabilities.

Ty Wallace is third in the bull riding world standings. Wallace won Nampa, Idaho’s Snake River Stampede and continues to crawl up the world standings. He’s has drawn Dakota Rodeo’s Crossfire, who has yet to be ridden this year. Today’s performance also features Joe Frost, who is just behind Wallace in the standings, and Tim Bingham, who is sixth.

Timed Events – Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Tie-Down Roping and Barrel Racing:

Oakdale, California’s Ryle Smith, just jumped from a little over $27,000 in earnings this year and around 27th in the standings to more than $77,000 in steer wrestling earnings after winning the Days of 47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City. He is now third in the PRCA all-around standings will compete here in steer wrestling and tie-down roping. Smith and his wife, Nika are new parents to their month-old daughter, Remy Nicole. J.D. Struxness, the defending CFD champion at age 22, would love to win his favorite rodeo again. No steer wrestler has won back to back CFD titles since California’s John W. Jones did it in 1988 and 1989 A win from CFD would also help Struxness move into the top 15. (He’s 19th now.) Struxness won the college championship for Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 2016. His college rodeo coach and fellow NFR competitor, Stockton Graves will also compete tomorrow and will likely be doing the hazing for Struxness.

The tie-down roping has a tough group competing in the fifth and sixth performances. All the contestants are in the top 45 of the PRCA world standings. Five of them are sitting in the top 15, including reigning world champion Tyson Durfey, but none of them have won a CFD championship.

Several CFD team roping champions will compete today. 2015 CFD champion header Luke Brown will be roping with Jake Long. Long’s horse, Zans Colonel Shine, won the prestigious 2016 American Quarter Horse Association heeling horse of the year award. Brown currently is third in the heading world standings and Long is fourth in the heeling standings. Tyler Wade and Dakota Kirchenschlager are ready to defend their 2016 CFD championship, but there is a catch. They each are roping with new partners this year. Wade will be heading for Clint Summers. Kirchenschlager will be heeling for Jake Cooper.

Reigning world all-around champion Junior Nogueira will be heeling behind Kaleb Driggers today. Nogueira is the first Brazilian to win a world title in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

Women’s Professional Rodeo Association cowgirls are ready to turn and burn in tomorrow’s barrel race with four competitors sitting in the top 20 in the world standings. Kassie Mowry is the number three cowgirl in the world standings. Amy Wilson, a Kansas native who lives in Springfield, Tenn., is a former Miss Rodeo America and the host of RFD-TV’s Western Sports Roundup. The best opportunity for all of today’s competitors to win a check here is today in the second round.

Teel’s 89-point bull ride gives him the overall lead at Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 25, 2017 — Tuesday, Cody Teel became the first cowboy to ride two bulls at the 121st Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (CFD).

The 2012 world champion scored 89 points on Rocky Mountain Rodeo’s bull Bomb Pop. That score put Teel at the top of the second-round leaderboard and, when combined with the 84-point ride he made on Monday, gave the Kountze, Texas, cowboy 173 total points. Teel +is virtually assured a spot in Sunday’s championship round when the 121 riders with the highest total scores vie for the 2017 CFD title.

Teel, who has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) five times, has an impressive rodeo resume. He’s won titles at every level from high school to the pros, but he’s never won a championship at CFD. This is one of his favorite rodeos and he would love to add the title to his resume.

The overall lead changed in four other events. Separated ribs aren’t slowing down Oregon’s David Peebles who turned in another score of 84.5 in the bareback riding. Although it wasn’t the high-marked ride of the day, it still gave him the overall lead by 2.5 points. Oklahoma’s Joe Lufkin leads the saddle bronc riding with 165 points, after an 83-point effort on Rocky Mountain Rodeo’s Elvira that tied for the second-round lead. Texas’s Jana Bean has already won more than $3,000 here by placing sixth in the first round of barrel racing. Her time of 17.59 seconds today leads the second round and put her first overall, seven-hundredths of a second ahead of fellow Texan Jackie Ganter who place third in the opening round.

The fifth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo starts at 12:15 p.m. tomorrow. All contestants will be competing in the first round, except the barrel racers who will be in round two.

Erickson wrestles first-round lead at Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 24, 2017 — Ty Erickson’s bid for his first steer wrestling world championship stayed on track Monday at the 121st Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (CFD). The Helena, Montana, cowboy moved into the lead in the first round of steer wrestling with a 7.2-second run.

Erickson, who leads the world standings by more than $30,000, received an assist from traveling partner Clayton Hass from Weatherford, Texas, who is ranked 15th in the world. Hass hazed the steer and helped get the animal into a good position for Erickson to make the jump. Later in the performance, Hass clocked an 8.1 to move into second place in the round.

Both cowboys were riding Landrys Cadillac, a two-time American Quarter Horse Association Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year. “Cadillac” won the award last year and in 2014 when he carried three of the top five regular season finishers to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR). The three were Erickson, Hass and eventual world champion Tyler Waguespack of Gonzales, Louisiana. Waguespack, who is ranked second in the world, was unable to get his steer on the ground.

Erickson went into last year’s WNFR as the regular season leader but saw the championship slip away during the 10 rounds of competition in Las Vegas. The Montana State University business management graduate has a business-like focus on winning his first gold buckle.

Redmond, Oregon’s David Peebles took the first-round lead in bareback riding when he scored 84.5 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Sugar Boom Boom. The ride was remarkable as Peebles has been receiving treatment for separated ribs from the Justin Sportsmedicine Team since the July 4th week of rodeos.

The fourth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo starts at 12:15 p.m. tomorrow. All contestants will be competing in the second round.
