Fiesta Day returns to Cheyenne Frontier Days™ with Grupo Control

Cheyenne Frontier Days™ has added Grupo Control as the Fiesta Day headliner for the 2017 celebration. Fiesta Day will take place in the Garden on Frontier Park on Sunday, July 23, 2017.

Cheyenne Frontier Days™ is offering a special Fiesta Day ticket package for $59. The package includes:

  • (4) South 40 Rodeo tickets,
  • Fiesta Day admission,
  • (1) Park-n-Ride pass
  • Additional rodeo tickets may be added for $13

Grupo Control began their musical career in Control, Tamaulipas located on the outskirts of Matamoros, Tamaulipas Mexico; very close to the Texas border. The creators of this successful group are siblings José Guadalupe Degollado and Sergio Degollado. Their talent and love for Regional Mexican music was highlighted from an early age. At that time with the support of their parents, the Degollado brothers formed a group called Super Llama while finding the musical concept that would launch them to fame.

Over time, with effort and the desire to succeed, these brothers decided to bring their music to the United States where they began Control so they would always remember the little town where they came from. Their father proposed they add new instruments such as accordion to make their band unique.

In 1999, during the Johnny Canales Show; Mr. Lupe Rosales, promoter of the label EMI Latin, discovered the group and gave them an opportunity to create their first album Cumbia sin Control where songs like Tao Tao, Maria Salome, and Cumbia Con La Luna were international hits.  At EMI Latin they created five albums over five years. These albums were titled Cumbia Sin Control (1999),  Fuera de Control (2001), Todo Bajo Control (2002), Controlandote (2003), and Los Reyes de la Cumbia (2004).

In 2005, they created two more albums entitled Mas Control (2005) and Controlmania (2006). They continued to transcend, making more albums and forming their own label and achieving five gold records, and a following of fans who are the reason why they continue to this day as Los Reyes de la Cumbia.

In 2009 the group took an unexpected turn and added not only one member but a great female talent who comes from the musical heritage of the Degollado.  Jennifer Degollado, is the daughter of Sergio Degollado and is a family pride due to her many talents which include singing, writing songs and playing instruments such as the accordion, guitar, and keyboard. In the beginning, she was only invited to participate in the song Eres lo que mas quiero. When the song was first presented she evoked inexplicable response and emotion from the crowd that they asked her to join the group. No doubt Jennifer gave a touch of youth to the group, and she was immediately accepted by their fans. Jennifer along with her dad and her uncle Jose Guadalupe released the 2011 album titled The New Face of Control where he shares the song Así.

Lupe and Sergio have achieved what they always dreamed—sharing joy, energy, and satisfaction through these moving songs. No doubt Grupo Control has shown us they have much to give their audience and will continue to win over hearts locally, in the United States and internationally.

When he was a teenager, Flo Rida found local success rapping with a group called the Groundhoggz. At 18 he became the hype man for Fresh Kid Ice from 2 Live Crew. Eventually, Flo Rida Caught the attention of DeVante Swing, formerly of famed R&B group Jodeci and spent a few years in Los Angeles working with him. With the success of his management company, Flo Rida and Lee “Freezy” Prince launched their own record label, IMG, in June 2011. The CFD Arrowhead Gang

By Will Luna, CFD Concessions Committee

You may have seen a crazy group at one of Cheyenne Frontier Days’ Grand Parades; running around, high-fiving kids, and showing their love and support for the CFD brand. But, do you know where they originated?

The Arrowhead Gang originated in the mid-to-late 90s from former Concessions Chairman Joe Prunty. Prunty was attending the Calgary Stampede and saw a group of individuals “riding” fake horses constructed from half a 55-gallon barrel with suspenders to support the weight, the legs sticking out of the bottom and the person walking, giving the illusion of someone riding a horse! Prunty brought back the idea to the Concessions Committee where four barrel horses were constructed and members participated during the pancake breakfast and pre-show entertainment before Frontier Nights.

The group didn’t have a name, or any official title, just some fun loving volunteers having a good time and adding to the CFD experience! The tradition continued from 1998-2000 when Marty Luna (an original member) became chairman and branded the group “The Arrowhead Gang.”  The group was built as a rough bunch of outlaws, equipped with more horses, official CFD Arrowhead Gang jackets and beat up hats.  The group was added to more events including pancake breakfasts, all Grand Parades, Frontier Nights pre-show entertainment, and at one point even had a part in the rodeo on the photo pit.  The Arrowhead Gang also ventured out to promote the overall brand of Cheyenne Frontier Days participating in parades and events such as Nebraska Land Days, National Western Stock Show Parade, Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Greeley Stampede Parade, Children’s Hospital of Denver Visits, and many more.

In the mid-2000s a mild theme change occurred switching from a rough and wild bandit group to more of a traditional rodeo group. The addition of bulls and a barrel man occurred, and the group continued to participate in parades and other events. However, entertaining during the rodeo, night show, and pancake breakfasts went away.

Today there is a new, younger generation taking over the Arrowhead Gang. The group still continues with the traditional rodeo theme of horses, bulls, and barrel man, but have added a rodeo clown and custom built horses and bulls for members as young as 8 years of age. Each year you can see them in all of the Grand Parades and numerous events around the region, but they have added events such as Cheyenne New Years Eve Ball Drop, Laramie Jubilee Days and others to their resumes.

No doubt these individuals love CFD and embody the volunteer spirit. They love what they do, and do it like only they can, whooping and hollering and making sure the legacy of Cheyenne Frontier Days carries on the magic and entertainment for many more generations.

Cheyenne Frontier Days General Committee to host Volunteer Fair

There are many people in our local community who have indicated a desire to participate in the production of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ (CFD). While others have said it is difficult to understand how volunteers are selected, and some have felt as if CFD was operating a “closed shop.” Nothing could be further from our intentions.

There are numerous areas on Frontier Park where additional volunteers are needed. Those areas range from information delivery, hospitality, visitor safety, public relations, parades and other duties.

General Chairman, Bill Berg said, “We are looking for volunteers who are willing to give their time as long as they are having fun. Our organizations adds volunteers every year, but until recently the process hasn’t been as open and transparent as we would like it. These “Volunteer Fairs” will change how we develop future leadership for Cheyenne and Cheyenne Frontier Days™. We are really excited about the new direction we are moving with our volunteers.” Wednesday, March 1, 2017, 5:30 p.m. at the Buckle Club The Buckle Club is located on the top floor of the Exhibit Hall, 8th Avenue gate.

Volunteer Fair Format:

  • Information about Cheyenne Frontier Days™, volunteering and a brief discussion about the function of the committees recruiting volunteers.
  • Representatives from each committee will be available to chat and answer questions.
  • Applications from those interested in becoming a CFD volunteer will be taken at the event.
