Each year, part of the carriage collection is taken out of the Museum and used in the four Cheyenne Frontier Days parades that happen the first Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday, and last Saturday. During that time, we fill the Carriage Hall with our Cheyenne Frontier Days Invitational Western Art Show & Sale where we showcase over $1 million worth of artwork. Shown are some of our staff and volunteers bringing the carriages back home to the Museum in August following the best 10 days of the year. The carriages are each cleaned to the best of their ability to be brought back in are remain on display until the next year. Don’t forget to come see them in the Museum and in the parades!
Shown here are images of the process it takes to set up the art shows. The Old West Museum hosts two art shows annually including the Western Spirit Art Show in March and the Western Art Show that spans over Cheyenne Frontier Days. The shows can have somewhere between 300 and 600 pieces of artwork included in them.
The Museum has a committee with Board representatives that go over all potential new artifacts. Each month, this committee meets to see the incoming artifacts and then gives their recommendation to the Museum Board of Directors who then decide whether or not to accept these items. These photos are from the September Collections Committee Meeting.
The Museum is responsible for receiving and preserving artifacts that provide an understanding of the history and culture of Cheyenne Frontier Days. When objects are brought in, we research and inspect the items for relevance to our Mission and Vision Statement. We prepare necessary documentation for the object; its history and nature. The Museum uses this information and these objects in exhibitions and research.
In maintaining objects over their Museum lifetime, proper means of care are applied. In telling stories with these items, these standards allow the Museum to build and foster public trust in the well-being of our collections. We do this so that the heritage of our community can be shared and engaged for many years to come.
