Cheyenne Frontier Days is donating the proceeds from the 2022 Pick Up Man campaign for suicide awareness and prevention, to Grace for 2 Brothers and the Wyoming Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Each organization will receive $4,690 which was raised from the sale of yellow feathers and yellow feather jewelry in support of the campaign.
Country music star Garth Brooks also helped the effort by creating a message to elevate the theme of the role of the rodeo Pick Up Man in the arena. The campaign encourages people to “reach out to a Pick Up Man or be a Pick Up Man for someone in need.” The new nationwide 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline information is also included. Individuals who see friends, family members, or neighbors struggling with mental health are encouraged to reach out.
The Pick Up Man campaign will continue as part of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Foundation and its mission to support the educational and philanthropic activities of Cheyenne Frontier Days, Inc. “Suicide touches everybody. It’s critical we all become a Pick Up man for someone else or reach out to our Pick Up man when life feels overwhelming. Yellow feathers help start the conversation of bringing awareness to suicide prevention and highlighting the need to reach out when needed,” said Renée Middleton, Executive Director of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Foundation.
“Our western culture of independence and self-reliance may inhibit people from seeking help, or people from offering help,” Tom Hirsig, CFD CEO said. “In rodeo, we call the pick up man a lifesaver in the arena. Every cowboy knows the pick up man is out there to help, to give a hand. And the athletes do not hesitate to reach out for help. We want everyone to use that example in their lives.”
The campaign acknowledges that suicide rates in the Rocky Mountain West are among the highest in the nation. “We wanted to raise awareness about these high rates in our state and region and make sure that individuals are connected to the national 988 hotline, where appropriate counseling can be provided,” said Rick Schum, CFD Foundation Board.
CFD will continue selling “Pick Up Man” hat feathers and necklaces as part of the campaign with net proceeds being given to local suicide prevention efforts.

Concert tickets will range from $72-$275, and if you see higher prices, then they are not being sold directly from Cheyenne Frontier Days.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days Dandies will be conducting a clinic on Sunday, January 29 at 5 p.m. at the Laramie County Community College (LCCC) Arena. It is highly recommended that interested candidates attend the clinic.
Dandies Tryouts will be conducted on Sunday, February 5 at the LCCC Arena. Interviews begin at 3 p.m. and horsemanship evaluations begin at 5 p.m. The horse used at tryouts must be the horse intended for the entirety of the program year.
All applicants must sign waivers and wear helmets if they are under the age of 18. Clinic and tryouts are open to high school women ages 14 to 19. Must be age 14 by June 1, 2023.

On her first assignment covering the carnival midway of Cheyenne Rodeo Days, a body drops from the top of the Ferris wheel inches from her videographer who was lying on the asphalt to get a special shot. Darcy knew the girl and her family which only galvanizes her determination to find the cause of Bridget’s death. Her investigation hits a snag in the form of CPD Detective Hank Nelson, who warns her to stay out of the investigation. Darcy decides Hank is attractive but annoying. She ignores his warnings. Another body drops. Chaos ensues. So far it has been a rough ride. Can Darcy solve both murders by the end of Cheyenne Rodeo Days?
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Paulla is a long-time resident of Cheyenne, Wyoming. She lives in a historic downtown area of the city with her husband, Roger Schreiner, a volunteer and past chairman at CFD. She is a member of Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, Sisters in Crime, and Wyoming Writers. She earned her B.A. from the University of Wyoming in English, Speech and Drama. She has a passion for history, reading, theatre, travel, and obviously writing.
Her book, Rough Ride, is her first published novel. It’s the first in the Darcy Moreland Mystery Series and all take place in Cheyenne, WY. With shows like Yellowstone, 1883, and rising popularity of all things Western, her book fits perfectly into this popular genre and is loosely based off of CFD.

Cheyenne Frontier Days™ (CFD) will put tickets for the 2023 event on sale December 1. Tickets for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rodeo, the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Team Series Event, Carnival Armbands and Gift Cards (redeemable for tickets or merchandise) will go on sale.

The 127th annual “Daddy of ‘em All®” will feature nine days of fast-paced PRCA and WPRA rodeo culminating in Championship Sunday where champions are crowned, and legends are made.
The PBR Team Series is an elite league which launched in July 2022 at Cheyenne Frontier Days, featuring the world’s top bull riders competing on teams in 5-on-5 bull riding games.
There will be hundreds of vendors, a full carnival, artists, food, and music celebrating the history and culture of the American West.
Daily rodeo tickets range from $23 – $48, with VIP at additional cost. A $3 discount is offered on rodeo tickets purchased before July 1. Caitlin Garcia has been named Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) Lady-In-Waiting 2023 after a selection process including submitting a written application, an accomplishment book, a horsemanship skills demonstration, and an interview.
Caitlin is the daughter of Cesar and Denise Garcia. She is a 2017 graduate of Cheyenne Central High School. After high school she was a full-time student at Laramie County Community College where she achieved her associates degrees in Animal Science, Equine Science, and Equine Training. Currently, she is attending the University of Wyoming, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Animal and Veterinary Sciences.
Caitlin’s first time in the CFD Arena was at the age of 8, competing in junior barrel racing. She represented CFD across Wyoming and surrounding states for five years as a Dandy. The accomplishments she is most proud of include: Reserve National Champion Veterinary Science Team, Top 20 National Veterinary Science Individual, and multiple local, regional, and national wins showing horses in versatility, ranch horse competitions, and horsemanship.
“It is a true honor to be selected as the 2023 Lady-in-Waiting! I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to represent Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo and the western way of life. To become my own childhood hero is an indescribable feeling! To know I have been chosen to represent the 3000+ volunteers who are Cheyenne Frontier Days and continue the legacy of Cheyenne Frontier Days royalty is truly humbling. I hope to make each person proud and fill the boots of those who rode before me,” Garcia said.
Caitlin will work with Miss Frontier, Jordan Johnson in 2023 to represent Cheyenne Frontier Days.
