Brazile leads tie-down roping, all-around at Cheyenne Frontier Days

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 29, 2017 — Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, moved into the lead for a possible eighth and ninth Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (CFD) championship on Saturday.

The 23-time world champion won round two of tie-down roping with a time of 10.5 seconds and captured first overall with a total time of 22.7. Brazile won the tie-down title at the “Daddy of ‘em All” in 2014. He also won the CFD team roping title in 2012 and the steer roping three times (2000, 2001 and 2013).

Although he has won the all-around championship here twice, he hasn’t done so since 2002. No one has won money in two events at Frontier Park this year, so the all-around title will go to the person that competed in two or more events and wins the most money. Brazile has the lead, but several other cowboys could win the versatility award.

Cheyenne Frontier Days is a family tradition for Brazile. When he was a child, he competed in dummy-roping matches against other youngsters under the grandstands when his father competed here. His daughter Style is carrying on that legacy. She was roping the dummy against the boys in the cowboy parking area on Sunday.

Stevi Hillman of Weatherford, Texas, took the overall lead in barrel racing Saturday. Her time of 17.63 was only good enough for eighth in the second round, but gave her a total of 35.11, edging Wyoming’s Cassidy Kruse by one one-hundredth of a second. She also added $1,252 to the $6,573 she pocketed for winning the first round at CFD.

Hillman, who qualified for her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) last year, is currently second in the Women’s Pro Rodeo Association (WPRA) world standings.

The radiologic technician is riding a five-year-old gray gelding called Sharpie (registered name MCMImaSharpGuy,) owned by Matt and Bendi Dunn. This is Sharpie’s first year to rodeo. Hillman began riding him in February and has been thrilled with his poise. Sharpie previously competed primarily in futurity barrel races where there aren’t a lot of distractions. Many horses take a while to acclimate to the rodeo atmosphere.

“He was pretty wound up, with everything going on in the performance,” Hillman said. “But he stayed focused and I was proud of him.

The competition concluded Saturday in the rookie saddle bronc riding. Quincy Crum of McArthur, California, took the championship with a total of 147 points. Crum, who qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo for Western Nevada College, was excited to win “the Daddy.”

“I’m extremely honored to compete at Cheyenne,” Crum said, “and to win it is huge.”

Crum works on his family’s ranch and shoes horses when not competing in rodeos. When he learned that his name would be added to a list of CFD winners that began in 1911 and includes many legendary bronc riders, Crum was stunned. “That’s pretty special, pretty cool,” he said.

Championship Sunday at the 121st Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo begins at 12:15 p.m. Sunday when titles will be awarded in the all-around, eight events and the wild horse race.
