Groundbreaking began in a big way today at Frontier Park in Cheyenne for a new, seven million dollar, multi-purpose building that will serve as Cheyenne Frontier Days headquarters and a lot more.
Officials on hand for the ceremony included Lynne Boomgaarden, a state supreme court justice and Cheyenne native with long ties to the western celebration. She was the first woman named to the event’s General Committee and recently served as its board chairman.
Cheyenne Frontier Days, President and CEO, Tom Hirsig, presided over the gathering. His family dates back to the rodeo’s earliest days.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days Board of Directors has named Jimmy Dean Siler as the next General Chairman. In this role, he will lead the General Committee in their efforts to produce the 123rd annual celebration. Siler replaces outgoing General Chairman Bill Berg.
Siler is retired from the Wyoming Livestock Board Criminal Investigation Division and the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigations. Prior to that, he served and retired from the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Siler attended the Air Force Community College, Okaloosa-Walton Junior College and the University of Maryland.

It’s been 86 years since a saddle bronc rider won back-to-back championships at Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD), but local favorite Brody Cress was not intimidated by history.
The 22-year-old from nearby Hillsdale won his hometown rodeo in 2017, an accomplishment that fueled the rest of his season and helped him win his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo championship last December. Cress is sponsored by CFD and proudly wears the legendary rodeo’s iconic arrowhead logo on his chaps and his shirts. “There’s no other rodeo I’d want to represent,” he said.

When an agent of the Union Pacific Railroad suggested Cheyenne have a festival to the editor of the newspaper in 1897, they had no idea of the legendary event that it would grow into.
With less than ideal weather during several of the 10-days of activities, attendance at this year’s Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) was beyond what might have been expected. The loyalty of fans is very gratifying for the nearly 3,000 volunteers who work year-round for the “Daddy of ‘em All.”

Tim O’Connell and Shane O’Connell are friends, traveling partners and no relation. The bareback riders along with the third member of their crew Logan Corbett will make their first appearance here today. Tim has won world titles the past two years, won his first Cheyenne buckle in 2017 and is currently leading the world standings. Shane is in 10th and Corbett is 17th. Nothing would make these three happier than to all qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) together.

Kaycee Field has been touted as one of the greatest bareback riders of all time and has the resume to prove it. He is the son of late Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer, Lewis Feild, who was a five-time PRCA world champion that never earned a Cheyenne buckle.

Three-time world champion bareback rider Will Lowe is no stranger to Cheyenne Frontier Day’s famous belt buckles. A CFD champion in 2009 and 2012, Lowe took the lead in the first round with an 86.5-point ride on Hi Lo ProRodeo’s Pretty Woman. He will be matched with Brookman Rodeo’s Cop a Feel where he will be going for broke to place in the average. Hot on his trail, Ranchester, Wyoming’s Seth Lee Hardwick is placing in the first round with his 85.5-point ride and has drawn Rocky Mountain Rodeo’s Good Times. Hardwick qualified for the 2015 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR), where he won money in seven rounds. Bareback bronc riding is the most physically demanding event in rodeo. Following the WNFR, he had hip surgery and missed the entire 2016 season. He came back and finished in 23rd last year. Neither Lowe or Hardwick are among the top 20 in the world standings, so the rest of the season depends on their success at Frontier Park.

The bareback riding world standings leader, Caleb Bennett will be trying to win his first Cheyenne buckle. Caleb has been
competing here for 10 years and is having the best season of his career. He started off the year with a big win at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo and hasn’t slowed down one bit since that title last February.
More than 700 guests will ride behind the Living Legend, No. 844 Denver, CO, July 20, 2018 – The Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days Train, presented by MDC Richmond American Homes Foundation, travels round trip from Denver to Cheyenne on Saturday, July 21. More than 700 passengers, selected through a ticket lottery in mid May, will be treated to a historic day of western entertainment which includes attending the “Daddy of ’em All” rodeo at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

The first performance of the 122 nd annual event saw Trey Johnson with a big smile after catching both back feet in the team roping. His partner Ty Bach had roped the steer by the horns and the Texas duo stopped the clock in seven seconds to take the lead in the first round at Frontier Park.

We might have a Wright in the lead for a championship buckle after this afternoon’s performance and it will be one that is competing here for the first time. Stetson Wright took the lead in the rookie saddle bronc riding yesterday with a hard fought for 74.5 points. He rode on Friday at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, then made the trip to Cheyenne with his parents and younger sister.

Today’s field of bareback riders includes three former champions of the Daddy of ‘Em All – Casey Colletti (2011). Orin Larsen (2016) and Will Lowe (2009 & 2012). Also competing today is Spur Lacasse, whose father Roger won here in 1994 and in 1998. Don’t be surprised if you hear someone speaking French behind the chutes (literally) as Lacasse and Pascal Isbelle are both French Canadian. Two Wyoming cowboys – Seth Harwick and Devan Reilly – begin their quest for a championship here, a goal of every contestant especially those from the Cowboy State. We will have two extra bareback riders today as well. Clayton Biglow and wyatt Denny have been collecting air miles. They rode their first horses here Saturday, then flew to Salinas, California to compete yesterday. They are flying back here today and hoping their success continues. Biglow finished second in Salinas and Denny was 8 th . Denny is sporting quite a mustache that he plans on growing until the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December.

Even though he isn’t a full-fledged card holding member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), Lane McGehee is at the top of the bareback riding field at the 122nd Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.
When a rodeo contestant joins the PRCA, they first get their permit. When they earn enough money on their permits they are eligible to become card holders. They can continue to compete as a permit holder while they are in college. McGehee, a student at Sam Houston State University is riding on his permit and focusing on his education. He competed for them at the 2017 College National Finals Rodeo and left with the championship as a freshman.

Paden Hurst had the highest marked ride in the bareback yesterday at 84 points. While the first round of bareback is not complete due to rerides, he is currently tied for fourth in the round. The 21-year old is a former College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) qualifier and is learning how to win, from his traveling partners. It is said that those you surround yourself with is who you become.

A pair of Wyoming barrel racers represented their state, and generations, well in the Cheyenne Frontier Days qualifying round on Friday. Elaine Hollings is a proud Pavillion, WY 68-year-old who rides a 14-year-old horse nicknamed ‘Fly.’ Karson Bradley was astride ‘Pixie’ and the Big Piney native qualified for the nationals last month as a Central Wyoming College Rustler. She is now planning to finish school in Laramie where she’ll rodeo at UW. Friday was her first run ever at ‘The Daddy.'”
